22 What Lies Beneath
After a little over an hour and a half of speeding due west from Key West, Megan slowed the old boat down to a steady cruise. She knew they were getting close to the site of what she truly believed was the wreckage of Amelia Earhart's lost plane, The Canary. Conversation had been at a minimum on the ride out there, partly because they were excited, both Megan and R.B. contemplating what it would mean to their futures if it was indeed Earhart's plane. But on the other hand their lack of chatter was because both were thinking about the mysterious call warning them off the site, not to mention the fact they were attacked by a military drone and almost killed. After learning about what had happened to Buddy, too, they also knew that whoever the 'bad guys' were knew they'd be coming out to the site and could arrive and attack them at any moment. It was enough to keep their excitement in check, focusing their minds instead on locating the site quickly and watching the horizon for an attack, either by sea or by air.
Megan didn't know it, but R.B. had secretly brought along his old rifle. He wasn't the best of shots, but he had some experience with guns from his tours of duty in Afghanistan, and after what had happened aboard Gidget and what they'd done to Buddy, R.B. felt it was better to at least have some form of defense. He only hoped he wouldn't have to use it.
"Are we there yet?" asked R.B., doing a terrible impersonation of Donkey out of the Shrek movies. It was a poor attempt, but it served R.B.'s purpose of easing the growing tension.
"Actually yes, any minute now," replied Megan.
The day was a little overcast, and a decent breeze kept grey clouds scudding through the air above them and kept a reasonable swell of white caps rocking the boat, enough of a swell in fact to test the countenance of R.B.'s belly. He loved boats and loved being on the water, but despite that he still suffered from occasional bouts of seasickness. His breakfast was safe for now though, and he focused his gaze on the horizon.
The inclement weather was both a good thing and bad. It was a disadvantage because it meant spotting the wreck would be a more difficult challenge, and also any visibility beneath the surface would be diminished. However, it did also mean they'd be naturally harder to spot for any would-be attackers. But not that hard, and both Megan and R.B. kept their eyes peeled and their minds alert.
"This is it," Megan finally said. "We're here."
She eased the boat to a stop and turned off the engine, and despite the very real potential for danger she couldn't keep the spark of excitement from her face. R.B. sensed it in her and felt the same. It seemed that for now at least they were okay, and he allowed himself the hint of a grin.
